Even a cop who believes relating his *occupation* to the victim’s relatives is relevant *at the scene of the accident*.
I can’t think of one Freeper here who, having struck a child in a tragic accident, would *think* to mention their occupation under the circumstances, unless it was. “I’m a doctor/nurse/EMT. I’ll treat your child for free.”
Most cops have basic (and annual) first aid training. They are also trained to identify themselves.
It is perfectly normal to act on training in situations that you have trained for. It also serves the purpose of letting the bystanders know that he will not flee the scene of the accident and is trying to help.
This cop did nothing wrong and you should get over your knee-jerk irrational hatred of all things LEO.

The officer announced his profession in an attempt to calm the father who was at this point already escalating toward the assault. Father acted out of emotion (not saying anyone would do different) and this ended tragically for all parties.
