if you have a problem with the FOP, there are multiple reports making the same claim. Do some research.

No doubt that the 18yo lost control, nor uncommon. What I’m saying is that the claim of deliberately risking himself for the girl sounds fishy. If he had that kind of time to think, then it would not have ended the way it did. It sounds like he MAY be trying to deflect criticism of his mistakes. Not uncommon for police.
What is also not uncommon is cops ignoring basic driving safety. Did you hear about the FL Trooper who stopped a Miami cop doing 120 going to an off duty job? Did you hear about the cops criticizing HER for stopping his nascar race? Or her stating that they do it every day.
There is also the nature of his injuries, suggesting a high rate of speed. Of course what the road was, and what the appropriate speed was isn’t known to us. But it reads like a confined street, where the speed limit would be low. In which case, it would be far less likely to result in those injuries.
As for the double standard. Has it occurred to you that cops have caused that attitude with their double standard in favor for themselves? It is very hard to ever get a cop truly punished for wrong doing. Or for cops to care about the wrongdoing of other cops. Cops defended Officer Harless, and I’ve seen them celebrate him able to get his job back.
Cops kill people, sometimes under very ridiculous circumstances, and all they have to say is “I was afraid.” No effort is made to determine if the fear was justified or reasonable.
Sorry if you don’t like my opinion of cops, but they’ve earned it hands down.
In that case, I obviously misunderstood your original point. We are in full agreement on where we're going as a society.

You know what gives it away that the officer acted properly?
It’s simple. If this was anything other than a traffic accident followed by a killing in self defense, you wouldn’t be able to read about it without the names Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton popping up. Those two grievance hustlers would be all over it. Not to mention Louis Farrakhan, the Black Panthers, and Eric Holder, just to name a few more of the usual crowd.
Maybe the cop is black.

You must have missed my tagline. I, too, am unhappy with our militarized police forces and the thin blue line mentality and unionized corruption.
But... acting like them (one standard for me and another for thee) won’t fix the problem.
If we are to take back control from law enforcement we have to treat them fairly and re-socialize them back to a constitutional civil society.
We should start by doing away with police unions and collective bargaining rights for public employees.

Agreed on that. Just remember that when you (cops that is) seem bent on ticking people off, people aren’t as likely to be nearly as fair in their standards. That is the price of arrogance.
I’m just saying I suspect the local police aren’t being nearly as critical of his claims about how he was driving as they would a non cop.
More than the unions, we have to stop letting cops investigate their own. I remember this headline a while back. “The Pima County Sheriffs PD has investigated the actions of the Pima County PD and could find no sign of wrong doing.”

Absolutely. I seem to remember a fairly recent Reason magazine article on some statute that police unions have gotten passed in most states that gives them additional "rights" during investigations that the general public doesn't have.
It's a total travesty of justice.
Not that it matters in this case. I really don't care what the bike rider did or didn't do that may indicate a share of fault.
No *real* father with two brain cells to rub together, delivers a beat down to an accident victim instead of seeing to the medical needs of his child, or instead of comforting her if injuries are minor or in front of his child period because violence is traumatizing to pre-schoolers.
No matter how many ways I slice it, the guy was engaged in thug rage and stupid. Now he's dead. Stupid is as stupid does.
