"They" are probably paying special attention to those who cancel email accounts, stop posting to forums, stop using cards, etc. in these first weeks after Snowden's announcement. "They" first will go after those they think are afraid.

I am reminded of Sophie's Choice. On a train, Sophie hides a black market ham under her coat and is arrested by the SS and sent to a concentration camp. Stingo says, "They arrested you for having a ham?" Sophie replies, "No, they arrested me because they saw that I was afraid."
