I think of the smoking ban in Michigan bars. The casinos lobbied for the law but made sure there was a loophole to exempt themselves.
In a free market world, no such law could have even been considered. There was no law against smoke free bars and restaurants so they should have been sprouting up all over the place without a law.
So Many of the health and safety regulation are prompted by isolated instances but have, as their real purpose, pricing potential competitors out of the market. Chain restaurants are winning against Mom & Pop because they Mom can’t afford to compete. If she struggles ahead, they’ll buy her out and put a franchisee in her place.
