This weekend, I had an estimate and a couple errands nearby-I was newly appalled at the way the awful economy has turned this place into a collection of closed businesses and empty houses because of the exodus of both full time residents and summer people-it is a ghost village...

This tiny community, and several others nearby went into the tourist/summer home business early in the 20th century, and simply did not have the foresight to see that not only would high unemployment in the city 30 miles away, and persistent high gas prices-plus the cyclical drought pattern-make for a mass exodus.
The communities that have survived reasonably well are not so tourist dependent, catering to residents and weekend customers from the city-no vaca or summer people there. I want to make one of those my home-build my little off-grid hobbit nest in the woods, get a few chickens, a couple of goats, open a cottage business that takes cash and barter, and I’ll be happy again, living among the other kindred spirits...
The first time I made that remark about beauty pageants and their contestants years ago, it was to a neighbor who had pushed her daughter into the things ever since the child was toddlers and tiaras age-the look she gave me should have knocked me to the ground...
The outlying communities would be okay if DC proper lost serious money because of the scandals, wouldn’t they?
I know how sad it would be if the Falls Churchers couldn’t afford a new Prius or pair of Birkenstocks, and had to eat generic trail mix...(sarcasm off)
the scandals will have zero impact on the local economy. cutting government is the only thing that will, and i don’t see anyone in a position to do so, who appears intent on it. They say the housing market has rebounded and the houses are moving.
You’re likely right about that, and the people in a position to do the cutting are us, by doing some smart and strategic voting-here’s hoping...
hard to hope, when they are guaranteeing that if this immigration bill goes through that Republicans will never win another election. Not quite sure what Rubio is thinking about but he self-immolated on this issue and there will be no coming back.
I think Rubio is too much of a Floridian to “get” how border states (and others) view illegal immigration-there is a difference between Cubans in Florida and illegals from south of the border in Texas, Arizona, etc.
Ted Cruz is an ethnic Cuban, like Rubio, but he is from Texas, so he might as well be of the same Mexican ancestry as the rest of us here who are native-born for many generations. It is a whole different world in Florida, and I think Rubio is looking at it through Miami glasses...
I also think the GOP is changing, and I’m all for that-the establishment GOP won’t like it, but they have gotten damn near as bad as the ‘rats on fostering the nanny state and corruption, in my opinion. I want to be part of a party that embraces liberty as defined in the constitution-call it that, call it libertarian, whatever...
Consider how the aging population of “bitter clingers” in western pa and the like feel. We dont have and see no need to import anyone of a different culture.
I totally understand that-we bitter clingers here don’t feel much different-we’ve been here-legally-since this was Spanish territory, so why should we be happy about by what amounts to an invasion of distant relatives who are lawless, ill mannered, uneducated and want a free pass to what our ancestors worked their asses off as pioneers and fought for as soldiers to have...
