It’s not just nostalgia for the good old days of command line interfaces, it’s a regret that a simple and powerful command line interface to the OS was not put into Windows, even though Windows was designed by David Porter (?) whom MS hired away from DEC, which had DCL running under VMS, later OpenVMS, perhaps the best ever OS shell, which continued to be available as VMS gained its own windows interface.
I don’t know this new Windows shell, mentioned above, that I’ve heard of but never used. Can it get into the guts of the OS? can it update the registry, or view it? Can it show us what the OS is doing right now?
I can buy any number of Dell “business class” laptops from my work when they go off warranty for $100+tax ,, typically they’re 14” core2-duo , 4gb ram and 160gb drive ,, freshly reloaded with XP ... If you want one let me know..

I’ve owned a dozen or more Dell desktops and even more local knock offs. 3 or 4 Hp/Compaq boxes that have all failed.
Dell boxes seem to be the most flexible although I’ve never owned a Dell Laptop.
I don’t think I would buy anything other than a Dell machine in the future.
It’s interesting you mention VAX/VMS, as I got my feet wet on DEC mini’s before the intro of PC’s & related networking. Even then after that it was using Banyan VINES before they settled into MS — Windows GUI was a fairly late-comer. Windows 7 is where the thrust of the req’d support is now.

Yes, I have been a faithful Dell owner for many years. But now, they are going out of business. Where does that leave us Dell-forever users?
My laptop is a Lenovo and it’s been pretty good.
Dell is NOT going out of business.
They are just going private.
They are engaged in a buyout that will remove them as a “publicly traded” company.
OK. I haven’t been following this that closely, I admit. So, you will still be able to buy Dell computers? And, are Dell computers still as good as they were in the past?

It is being restructured somehow, but I am wondering if Dell Computers will continue to exist.
If you run a business and you want to continue running on the cheap, the Microsoft Windows solution that you've got right now probably doesn't need upgrading except to replace failed hardware. Next to zero reason to invest in anything that Microsoft is trying to sell, or any other PC hardware manufacturer. Just continue to use your junk pile until it croaks. The sales figures aren't lying here either, now going on several years in this shaky economy.
If you're a common end-user who can't get by anymore with your junky old PC or laptop and are looking to buy something new to replace it, there's better options than a Microsoft Windows machine. This is the only segment of the information tech market that's absolutely going gangbusters and Microsoft isn't even in the game. That's all you need to know.
What "better options" than a Microsoft Windows machine are you talking about? And would documents generated on my present PC be operable on the "better option?

Just to let you know.
I’ve got this HP Dv7 laptop running for the first time in nearly a year. I want to use it because it has better graphics and sound than my Dell XP desk top.
What a mess though.
I uninstalled a dozen or more programs. I updated a few others. The Windows update, 79 in all, took 4 hours to complete.
I’m well aware of overheating issues and have the thing set up for maximum air.
Still crashing when I run video/youtube type stuff. Never maxing out the processor. But at least it will restart now.
I’m convinced that the problem is with the battery.
It won’t run on battery alone and you can’t run it on AC without the battery. I think the Battery is overheating and or is losing a proper connection.
The missus laptop was a Vista update issue.
I scrapped Vista, went to Se7en, grabbed a second hard drive, and kept the old data on her old drive accessable that way.
The DV7’s did have battery issues, but I don’t recall the exact model runs.

Yes, quite a mess.
I hated Vista, it was heavily annoying, and the update issue was the final straw.
It wouldn’t boot, and when it did it wouldn’t shut down.
Or it took glacially forever to do anything.
[Dual core processor, moved slower than my Athlon XP 2800 single core. All due to one update. That refused to be fixed. Oh, and system restore didn’t work.]

I can move the stuff I want but I don’t want to spend a whole lot of money to get off Vista and actually use this machine.
windows 7, works better than Vista and isn’t near as annoying.
My wife has the DV7, I got it for her to use with her digital camera.
I didn’t spend too much to move the laptop to Win7, the hard drive wasn’t all that much.
Most expensive part money wise was win7, timewise it was the drive cage for the laptop.
[Ordering a hard drive cage for a DV7 is an interesting experience.]
Thanks! Another EDT feature I liked was the ability to open any file no matter what the record length was.
