I would say we are not as opressed as China but I do remember Obama was so impressed with how China runs things that he said they were a good example.

Yeah. Most of China is heavily oppressed, which is probably why the whistle blower went to Hong Kong. The socialists in Europe wouldn't have protected him. Even Russia has agreed to give him asylum, because his own government would make sure he went "missing" long before he made it home.
I don't think he had much of a choice but to flee to a country that wouldn't turn him over to the regime. At least he's alive today.
