Shortly after I got my first computer, I got into a "What was it like back then" phase of rock n' roll stars and recordings.

One of the more fascinating aspects about music of the fiftie's and early sixties was the techniques used to produce some familiar sounds we remember today.

A lot of Elvis (f'rinstance) recorded in a hallway in a little studio on a hot summer day in Memphis ... to produce that echo effect

Today you simply load up an impulse response file for a convolution reverb VST and get any hall you like ;)

I do electronic music as a hobby. The sheer power to record amd make music in even a low end laptop is amazing. Sure, the ‘real’ stuff is better. But tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands better? No.

Was that how "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" and "Heartbreak Hotel" were recorded?

You’d probably be interested in the you tube video of the Making of 10cc’s “I’m Not in Love.” Absolutely amazing what Eric Stewart went through to create the wonderous backing vocals and ethereal presence. Check it out.
