The introduction of the steam shovel and backhoe changed the hard realities of disposition of the dead in ways it's difficult to explain.

Has one person here ever dug a 8X4X6 hole with hand tools?

Some latitudes left the dead stacked like cordwood for months until the ground thawed enough to dig a hole.

There is a Nat Geo documentary called “Viking Apocalypse”

They were building or widening a roadway in the south of England, and discovered a bunch of bones together.

The thesis is that a group (probably Vikings) were beheaded. They use science to determine who, and perhaps why.

Studying teeth reveals diet, studying diet reveals childhood location, etc.
