AS A GENERAL RULE, DOGS SENSE THAT I am on their side, one of them, so to speak. But I give them the choice of whether and how to respond to my offered hand before presuming to touch them.
I know some folks will not like this, but I am a bit wary of any dog that has the appearance of a pit bull, or American Staffordshire (whatever the polite, upscale name is), more cautious about offering my hand.
The open, friendly interest of a small child wanting to pet the doggie can result in deep tragedy, and not only with pit bulldogs.
