You indicated they claimed to have checked for signs of life. If they were close enough to check for signs of life, why did the big, burly heroes fail to pick up the *SMALL-CHILD* (dead or alive) and egress? Ergo, the lying, cowardly sacks of bull-mess didn't actually check. You've been dodging that question all along, perhaps because you doubt their CYA tale too, but can't bring yourself to admit it.
The father was within his rights to try and the cowards stopped him. Part of their reason was likely because they didn't want him to show them up by doing the job *they* were supposed to do. You just can't pry yourself off their legs long enough to apply the least bit of critical thinking to their implausible CYA tale.
