Matt Smith to leave Doctor Who at the end of year

Doctor Who star Matt Smith is to leave his role as the Doctor at the end of this year, the BBC has announced.

After four years as the Time Lord on the BBC One show, viewers will see Smith's Doctor regenerate in the 2013 Christmas special.

The 30-year-old actor said working on the show had been "the most brilliant experience".

Doctor Who marks its 50th anniversary in November with a special episode, which Smith has already filmed.

The BBC said Smith's "spectacular exit" was yet to be revealed and would be "kept tightly under wraps".

Smith first stepped into the Tardis as the 11th Doctor in 2010. Taking over from David Tennant, he was the youngest actor to play the role.

Speaking after the announcement, he said he was "incredibly proud" of what the show had achieved over the last four years under Steven Moffat, the show's lead writer and executive producer.

Smith also thanked fans around the world for their "truly remarkable" dedication to the show.

Yep. And the first episode was barely noticed because of it. It only took a month later with the introduction of the Daleks.

Tom Baker is still our favorite. We occasionally pick up a classic Dr. Who on Netflix.

We totally lost interest when Davison took over. And it didn’t get any better with subsequent Drs., so we quit watching. I think that was about the time we started watching Red Dwarf...who needed Dr. Who when you had Dave Lister.

Have watched the new Dr.s and each had their own appeal, I like the story lines, better than some of the old Dr. Who series. I thought the Van Gogh episode was brilliant. And enjoyed them bringing in known historical characters into the story lines.

I agree.

And I always LOVE when historical figures are brought into the story.

It’s what being a “Time Lord” is all about! LOL!

I grew up with Baker/#4 as well. Davison and McCoy were tied for the worst - McCoy because he tried to politicize everything.

I have enjoyed all the recent Doctors, Nine, Ten and Eleven. It’s a toss-up for who the best companion has been; I always liked Donna, and Rory “I’m a Nurse!” Williams.

But when I saw John Hurt being introduced as the Doctor, I immediately thought “Valeyard!!”

As River once said, “Like I told you on the dance floor: you might want to find something to hang onto!”

Tom Baker has always been my favorite as well. However, I did rather like Peter Davison (I was lucky enough to meet him and his wife at the time - she played "Trillian" in the BBC-TV "Hitchhikers Guide - at a St Louis Dr Who/HHGTTG convention in the late 80s), it just took me a while to get used to him. But I also lost interest in The Doctor with Colin Baker, and really didn't continue watching at that point.

Yes, there are.

Idris Elba would be great, but he’s going to be a huge Hollywood star soon. Paterson Joseph, Adrian Lester, Dorian Harewood, Chitewel Ejifor would all be very good in the roles. Dr Who needs to stay young-ish and actiony (lol), 30-49, not too young, not too old.

‘out there’?.....someone like Eddie Izzard might be a good shout.
