Only Dane Cook could turn a charity performance for the Boston Strong concert into a catastrophe.
For those who havent heard, Boston Strong was a music and comedy benefit concert for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. The lineup included Aerosmith, New Kids on the Block, and James Taylor and Carole King, as well as several comedy acts. The sold-out, six-hour concert was also livestreamed on multiple audio and video feeds for those who could not attend in person, including not just average Americans but some Boston Marathon bombing victims as well.
Imagine peoples surprise, then, when the feed cut out just as Cook took the stage to perform his comedy routine. Amid speculation as to what happened, Cook tweeted: Hey everyone sorry my set was not a part of the live stream or televised! I didn't want any of the new material to hit the airwaves yet!
Wait, so youre not livestreaming your routine at a charity concert because youre worried about losing money? Classy as always, Cook.
I could continue to comment on the tastelessness of it all, but then again, I have Twitter to do that for me. Be prepared for profanity.
And lets be honest, with Cook consistently rated as one of the worst comedians in the U.S., was livestreaming it really that much of a threat to him? Nobody is stealing his material, nor were his absolute die-hard fans going to pass on a chance to see him live anyway. And thats not to mention that much bigger names than him were completely fine with airing their pieces for the world.
Even if youre really that paranoid about losing content, then why not just do an old routine? Cooks been in the business for many years now, so it cant possibly have been that difficult to dig something up.
Instead, after volunteering his time and efforts at what should have been an amazing and inspiring act of charity, Cook just ended up with a PR nightmare on his hands.
To put it Twitter format, that was #bostonweak.
As a lifelong resident of Massachusetts I can confirm that today,Princess Liawatha and "Coupe Deval" Patrick are considered "Boston Strong".
Dane Cook is one of the biggest douche-bags out there. If you look up the term douche-bag. His picture is next to the entry. I also heard he is secretly a homosexual, and is okay with it. Just saying.
My first impression of Dane Cook was what a smarmy creep he is. My lasting impression of Dane Cook is that he is a typical lefty smarmy creep.
Perhaps you are Dane Cook.
I wish.
Perhaps you are Dane Cook. LOL!
Got that right. Dane Cook is a smarmy, lefty creep.
You wish you were a smarmy, lefty creep like Dane Cook, or you wish that you had Dane Cook’s money?
“but the last standup great would have to of been Sam Kinneson “
He was hysterical. But I have to go with Richard Pryor as numero uno. In his heyday he was the best of my generation. His private life was a mess but his shows were funny.
Wah wah, mean old Dane Cook wont give us our free stuff.
You are correct.
Here’s the thing.
Musicians record an album and then go out and tour and promote the album.
Comedians do typically an hour of material, and only when they’re ready to junk the old material and move on to a whole new hour of material do they capture and document the stuff as an “album” or a “comedy special”.
It’s no good comparing what Cook did to what the musicians did because the fundamental premises are in no ways comparable.
If you hadn’t put up this thread, I’d never have heard of him. That’s probably true of most FReepers.
