By not getting a burger at a particular Whataburger a very long time ago. ;-)
How many of you remember, “Corpus Christi, That’s My Home Town” (see around ‘61)? Okay, maybe someone younger than that can remember “Corpus Christi Wind.” I watched the drunks drive to music at the old C.C. Speedway (the older, smaller track—not the Association dirt track that later opened.).
I was on the Island many times before there were any buildings on it (except the Pier in the Park entrance). I remember the first building on the beach: the one that nearly everyone had that evil wish for (_______ ______ Inn). I used Bob Hall Pier before it was shortened by the weather.
Went skiing at Lake Mathis very shortly before sitting through Hurricane Celia. Went surfing next to a couple of jetties just before a tropical storm (before things got choppy, and yes, where sharks were often seen). Rode riptides out and played in undertows. I drove under the gusher across Padre Island Dr. around...’73, I think (some kind of accident there, and the well was capped afterward). ;-)
