I remember when Mr. Reese wrote his last column, and it was his last column too. He didn’t keep coming back with a few others on special occasions. When he retired, he retired, unlike so many who keep going back to work after “retirement,” especially in the education field, functioning as “substitutes”.

Mr. Reese was one of those who kept criticizing the lack of backbone in our little Republican Party.

Someone so compassionate about America and seeing the steady decline in America these past years could have their health affected by it. It certainly doesn’t add to it, that’s for sure. RIP, Charley.

To a certain degree, Charley was a voice in the FL wilderness, given the takeover of central and southern FL by Yankees. He was a great read and I’ve certainly missed him since his retirement. RIP...

"Gun-control laws are an effort by elitists to control the people, whom they naturally fear."

•"I wouldn't give you two cents for the future of any country that has turned morality upside down so that legitimate businesses now feel called upon to punish the Boy Scouts for the Scouts' high moral standards."

•"I don't see any reason to be afraid of nuclear weapons. They can do to you only what time, a microbe, an accident or too much chocolate cream pie is going to do anyway."

•"Network television is a lot better than public television. I would rather watch a good car chase any day than five minutes of the rear end of a sea turtle laying eggs."

Charley Reese's voice was an early influence for me... A good man has been lost. Bless his family and loved ones and give them comfort.

A talented and witty writer, all the great ones are passing on. We’re left with the likes of David Brooks

Charley was a friend. In contrast to the direct and strongly stated writing style of his columns, in person, Charley was soft-spoken and thoughtful, with a deep stock of knowledge and experience leavened by a gentle sense of humor. Most of all, Charley was a patriot, distrustful of elites and with a genuine love for our country. He influenced public opinion for decades and helped move it in a conservative direction. Charley Reese deserves our thanks and our prayers.
