The Doors' founding keyboardist, Ray Manzarek, died in Germany Monday after a long fight with cancer, his publicist said in a statement. He was 74.

The artist had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer.

The Doors formed in 1965 after Manzarek happened to meet Jim Morrison on California's Venice Beach. The legendary rock group went on to sell 100 million albums worldwide, establishing five multiplatinum discs in the U.S

Morrison died in 1971, but Manzarek carried on The Doors' legacy, continuing to work as a musician and an author.

I saw the Doors in concert in Seattle. The music stopped and Morrison bummed a cigarette from the audience, lit it up and then the fire marshall shut down the bands power and turned on the lights. Concert over.

He inspired a whole new genre of players, including myself.

Incense and Peppermints by the Strawberry Alarm Clock, which scored about three months after "Light My Fire," sounds like it might have been inspired by the Doors and Manzarek.

Krieger played an understated but perfect guitar for the genre. Never heavy metal but he matched the song.

I'm a guitar player for over 50 years. His fills, along with Manzarek for Morrison, were always dead on.

If Manzarek hadn't taken that initiative, the band would have been a one-hit wonder.

Yet the band failed to succeed after Morrison's death, in spite of their efforts to keep going.

I take it the Doors song you are referring to in your last sentence is “The End”, which several lines reference Oedipus.
Ever hear of that?
It’s an old story.

You may as well take D.H. Lawrence to task for writing fiction with Oedipal/Freudian undertones.

Oh Flanders there can’t grasp that Jim Morrison could be thinking of a classic story reference in a song. I just HAS to be the drugs ir being a hippie. And I was born in 1972 so certainly not a hippie but LOVE the Doors. Even had the privilege of meeting Robby Krieger in 1993 at a local sshow.

Hey, I know he’s no Justin Beeber, but was that post really necessary?

A lot of us (older freepers) here know who this is and are sad by this news

Definitely. One of my favorite guitar solos. They did two live studio takes of LMF according to Manzarek. I’ve listened to almost all the live versions out there but never heard it as well done as the studio. Of course they had been playing it for quite a while before laying it down in the studio. And watching morrison prowling around the stage must have been distracting.

Another tasty one was “you’re lost little girl”. Perfect little crafted jem of a guitar solo.

I remember spending hours and hours trying to play the intro keyboard to “light my fire”

It is probably the most intense lessons I forced myself to do, and I learned to play so much more for the exercise.

Have you heard the album post Morrison? It is titled Other Voices. Under other circumstances I would claim that it was the best Doors album, but considering that folks are already stirred up I will only suggest that you give “Ships with Sails” a listen on YouTube. Great keyboard work.

I do know who Ray Manzarek is. At one time, I really liked him and the Doors. Now I know better.... I wish folks would stop and consider their fondness for secular pop and classic rock music, especially those who consider themselves social conservatives, Christians, and just plain all’round conservatives. Consider who you stand with in fondness.
