Santa Cruz police are keeping watch on a mountain lion that is trapped in an aqueduct off of May Avenue near Ocean Street in downtown Santa Cruz.

The big cat was first spotted at about 7:30 this morning, behind a medical facility on Water Street. Police are awaiting the arrival of a University of California Santa Cruz wildlife expert to assess the situation.

You just sent 70% of the local population into shock with that visual.

Me? I'd be dithering over whether to use the .30 cal that isn't quite the same tack-driver that the .22-250 is.

And calling to make arrangements with our taxidermist.

A cougar in Santa Cruz? Most are in LA, aren’t they?

This is less than a mile from the San Lorenzo Park and the river. Why is a thirsty cat in an empty aqueduct when there is a river and a park pond or lake nearby.

Doesn't look empty to me. Looks like there's some water in it.

Besides, asking why catz do ANYTHING is futile. The answer is always "because I wanted to" or "to inconvience you".

Well, that is a good point. I can’t help wondering if it was following the scent of blood wafting from a medical waste dumpster.

Throw Helen Thomas in there with him.

He’ll find a way out pronto.

“I see Mountain Lions on a semi regular basis.”

I live in the East Bay and have never seen a wild lion. I’ve seen footprints in a number of local parks and talked to people who have lost goats and pets to them, however. In my area, they are only rarely seen, but they’re out there for sure.

Despite the public’s perception of declining Mountain Lion populations in California, they are quite numerous and for the most part have lost their fear of humans. I see Mountain Lions on a semi regular basis.

A DFG warden confided in me a few years ago that the mountain lion population has greatly increased in California and they have totally lost their fear of man due to no one shooting at them anymore. I have seen a few and find their tracks, some in my front yard, all the time.

Thats what Mr. GG2 said. Put a fire ladder down in there and run like heck and let it climb out. :-)

Put a fire ladder down in there and run like heck and let it climb out.

I am thinking the climb would be started prior to the ladder reaching the bottom.

I suspect, if you try to put the ladder there, you are going to meet a large cat face-to-face before you turn around.

Send the FNG to place the ladder.
