OK ... what I heard this morning is that it was scrawled on the inside wall (?) of the boat with a pen.

Has anyone ever tried to write with a pen on fiberglass?

It was a marker not a pen. I suspect he found it in the boat. But then he was a student so maybe carried it with him.
