To avoid getting caught with their pants down, Venezuelan officials say they will confront a toilet paper shortage by importing 50 million rolls to meet demand.
Toilet paper is just one of the basic goods and foodstuffs that have been disappearing from store shelves over the past few months, as the government and private companies blame each other for the scarcity.
The government also casts blame on private companies, who they accuse of hoarding their products in hopes of selling it later at a higher price.
But businesses and the political opposition say government policies, including price controls on basic goods and tight restrictions on foreign currency, are to blame. The regulation discourage production, and many producers can't break even with the price controls, they say.

FUnnie you mention that because I just got off the phone with my wife who is currently in Venezuela for about another 10 days. Yes, she verified the shortages are real (especially TP but also corn flour and milk) so I told her I would use my couponing skills to pick up a bunch of bags of Pan Harina (corn flour) and ship them down there. Also toothpaste. BTW, they use corn flour everyday in their arepas and it has to be just one brand specially made and pre-cooked. Once we tried using another type of corn flour and the arepas were basically inedible.
As to TP, that might be a bit bulky to ship. Takes up a lot of space.

BTW, the exact TP coupon to use is Marcal and the store to get them at is Albertson's. 3 years ago I had so much FREE TP that I had them stacked up to almost the ceiling in my dining room and living room. It was about that time I figured I went a bit overboard so nowadays I only stock up reasonable supplies that can be stored out of sight. I can get FREE TP whenever I want so why line my walls with the stuff. Not necessary.
p.s. Couple of weeks ago I scored 6 bottles of liquid Tide detergent for just 4 bucks total due to a nationwide Dollar General store computer glitch.
p.p.s. Out the door now to spend from my recent stockpile of FREE VISA gift cards which I got with coupons.
