Are barrel cactus different from cholla?? Yes...the nickname for the cholla is “jumping cactus” because of the way those spiny clusters so easily detach from the plant and attach to you or your pets.

Jumping Chollas are nasty plants. Seems like all you have to do is walk anywhere NEAR them and you can get stuck. I made the foolish mistake one time when I just moved to Arizona of kicking a piece of one that was on the ground. It stuck to my shoe like glue.

My MIl's little dog got tangled with one when they were at a rest stop on their way to visit us a few months ago. Luckily, as in this story, there were some helpful people around to help her out.

People that have cats or other small animals that live in coyote country are fools for letting them run around outside. In Arizona, coyotes were here long before us and they have an important niche in keeping down the population of critters even more undesirable than themselves.
