If AA excluded gays, half the membership would drop out and no one would be helped. I’ve known so many gay men in NYC and those that survived the AIDS crisis, sobered up with AA.
I understand the context of your post, but it would be even worse than that - if AA excluded ANYONE, as a group, AA would dissolve and nobody would be helped. Early writings indicate they wanted to exclude those with moral failings (as if the majority of drunks are paragons of morality) and decided that they better act as if Jesus was in charge and that it was far better to "hate the sin but love the sinner". As a result, AA accepts anyone who expresses a desire to stop being enslaved to alcohol and admits liars, cheats, thieves, adulterers, Whites, Blacks, homosexuals, and even Democrats....It is probably the most tolerant and non-political "organization" on the face of the Earth and will remain so as long as the Big Book remains firmly based on the Bigger Book. I'm a mere tyro with 24+ years, but have learned a lot about others and myself by being encouraged to examine myself first. It has strengthened me, my faith, my family and my marriage.
