SAN MATEO, Calif.—A limousine traveling on a major bridge in the San Francisco area burst into flames, killing five female passengers who were trapped inside and injuring four others who escaped, authorities said Sunday.
The limo was carrying nine female passengers and a male driver when it caught fire late Saturday on the San Mateo bridge, California Highway Patrol officer Art Montiel told The Associated Press.
The patrol said that smoke started coming out of the rear of the limo, and the driver pulled over as the vehicle quickly became engulfed in flames. Officers were trying to determine the cause of the blaze, which wasn't the result of an accident.
"We have no idea right now where they were going or where they were coming from," CHP officer Amelia Jack told KGO-TV.

My theory - based upon absolutely nothing but wild speculation — is that the fire started due to careless smoking by one or more of the passengers.
Freebasing?
Something like that.

Flame retardant materials have been required in vehicle interiors for decades. That doesn’t mean it won’t burn but it’s very difficult to ignite under any reasonable circumstance such as a dropped cigarette. Something served as an accelerant. Flammable liquor?
Indeed fits the democrat controled state.

That’s what I’m thinking. It was a Lincoln Town Car type limo. To hold 9 passengers it must have been a stretch version. It must have started with flammables. The driver could have kept gasoline in the trunk that leaked or it could have been something the passengers had with them. Or as others have mentioned freebasing. In any case it was a terrible way to go.
I think the fire is electrical in nature and they should look at who wired the lights, speakers etc in the limo. I have seen a poorly wired alarm set the center console of a vehicle on fire and the car went up in just a few seconds once the fire was noticed.
When you open the doors to get out, there is a bunch more oxygen and the fire can really take off fast.
This is nothing to joke about. There is no evidence in the article that the women did anything to cause the fire that resulted in their horrifying deaths. They could have been out on the town to celebrate a birthday, or a bachelorette party. This is just tragic.

For all we know these were Parochial school girls on their way to prom with the boys at the gender segregated Parochial school across the bay.

These women were likely out on the town. It could be a combination of liquor, hair spray, cigarettes...
That's easy. They were headed from one side of the Bay to the other. *facepalm*
I used to drive across that bridge a lot, and it's a pretty long span with few places to pull over in case of emergency.
