Founding member of pioneering thrash metal band dies of liver failure

Just over two years after contracting a rare skin tissue disease, Slayer guitarist and songwriter Jeff Hanneman died on Thursday from liver failure at Hemet Valley Medical Center, near his home in Southern California's Inland Empire area.

Slayer made the news public on Thursday afternoon, announcing that the band "is devastated" and calling Hanneman, who was 49, their bandmate and brother. Twitter quickly filled with messages from fans and fellow musicians, many of whom were in Los Angeles for the 5th Annual Revolver Golden Gods Awards show at Club Nokia. Disturbed/Device frontman David Draiman was among the very first, posting "RIP TO A TITAN OF METAL," while drummer Mike Portnoy wrote, "WOW...I'm in shock...RIP Jeff Hanneman."

If it would do any good, I’d pray for his soul. There are now numerous articles and eulogies praising Hanneman for his skills and ‘contributions’ to music.

“Screams and nightmares
Of a life I want
Can’t see living this lie no
A world I haunt
You’ve lost all control of my
Heart and soul
Satan holds my future
Watch it unfold”
- The Antichrist, album Show No Mercy

I used to listen to a LOT of heavy metal - for over 20 years. It all came to an end the moment I witnessed Phil Anselmo of Pantera on stage shouting, “Hail Satan!” - Irvine Meadows, CA 1994.

I grieve that any human being would so willingly give their life and their talents over to the Enemy. I can only hope and pray that Mr. Hanneman found the peace with Christ that he, like myself, so desperately needed.

Several years ago, during my college days - one of my first jobs was a server at a local chain restaurant out here in Orange County, CA. Slayer’ s studio was down the street & they would come in all the time..nicest guys & hilarious.
Paul Bostaph was their drummer at the time so that should tell you how long ago...

RIP Jeff
