What’s a HAB ?

An abbreviated form of "Habitants".
Loosely translates as "our boys" or "the home team".

Been a Hockey fan for 20 plus years and always wondered what it was.

Hi, Yes you are right HAB means Habitants. "Habitants" as a salute to the first French Canadian settlers. Therefore, the Canadiens were often referred to, and still are, as Habitants or simply "the Habs". The "C" and "H" on the sweaters simply mean Canadiens Hockey Club.
