Actually, the shutoff occurs with significant capacity left in the tank, 4-6 gallons in our work Fords and over 2.5 in my Chevy.
I always manually retract the vapor hood and visually fill to the top. It's difficult on some pump styles that have a tight trigger or the long boot, but most of them are set to dispense at a graduated rate.
I LIKE having an extra day between fills, or the ability to get 525+ miles out of a tank on my truck on a road trip...

I do the same. I usually pay cash so I like to end the numerals on an even dollar.
For the last few years I've been buying gas at the farmers co-op because it's ethanol free. The extra cost is a wash because I get more mileage.
