He was very lucky that the gunshot scared the griz away - it doesn't always work, particularly with bigger males in a large sleuth.

Climbing a tree doesn't help either. Sometimes only 6-8 well placed slugs from a 45 magnum will do the 'stop the charge' trick.

That's what I was thinking. Don't know if I would've waited so long to start shooting. Fascinating that she broke off the charge. Scared not only for herself, but her cub, too, I guess.
