There are pictures of fragments of the ICs and batteries taken at the scene.

I did just that. These 'mortar shells' already have a 'fuse' in them. Why not use it?

Now... if we make the assumption that the devices were 'set off' by someone other than the boys (whose job was to place and 'enable' the bomb), then it would make more sense.

If the brothers did this with a remote control, where is it ?

There were two different 'cards, IIRC. Shouldn't there be only one in the bomb ? Many other posters were saying this 'card' was from the transmitter of an RC toy. That makes no sense.

For these reasons, I am skeptical of the RC detonation.

Because it’s harder to light a fuse in the middle of a crowd than it is to just push a remote button.

That should be self evident. I know everyone has their pet theories... but damn...
