the exception i’d make’are black labs, they are the most kid protective dog breed i know of. unless you don’t consider them’to be a big dog, i am not sure if they are classed that way.

Black labs are crazy. Every black lab I’ve had or known is a psycho kill every other dog, but be the nicest, most gentle animal when it comes to humans.

They’re like a Steibeck character. Dumb and loyal to a fault. Doubt they’re commies though.

The most protective dogs for kids that I know of are border collies and German shepherds. As a child we had a Shepherd/Lab (yellow lab) mix. That was the most protective dog we ever had. Check this out.

Little girl plays with 14 German Shepherds

I would not trust 14 pitt bulls with her.

I have had no experience with labs, but still would not trust them with small children and by that I mean babies and toddlers. Every baby I have ever seen has to be taught to be kind to animals; by instinct they are not kind, probably see the family dog as another toy not realizing it has feelings. During that baby/toddler stage when children are learning not to be mean to animals I think it is very risky to have them around big dogs of any breed unless an adult is right there hands on managing the encounter.

I have seen really nice gentle dogs react badly to fear and pain and babies and toddlers can dish out both so to me it is just not a combination to trust. It only takes one time of dog biting child for it to end badly with the size difference.

We had a male black lab when our third child was born. He was about 2 at the time, so at that doggie age when they can be unpredictable. But this dog, RIP, was a gentle as could be. We have lots of pictures of him sleeping next to the baby on the baby blanket on the floor, with her using him as a pillow, etc. What a great dog he was.

I once moved to the city and gave my old yellow Lab to my hunting partner. After a few weeks living with him, his wife was in the house and the three little kids were playing out in the yard. UPS truck showed up and my old gentle dog who never frowned in his life refused to let the driver out of the truck. The wife introduced them and after that he was welcome any time and greeted with a smile.
