Actually, that is a tsurugi. A katana is the short sword often carried in companion with it.

Most likely, it was carbon steel, not hardened steel. The real McCoy samurai sword in hardened steel is worth tens of thousands of dollars if you are lucky enough to find one.

The carbon steel replicas look nice but cost about $80 for a tsurugi and katana set. They wouldn't feel very nice on the back of your neck, but they won't behead with a single stroke either.
