I always thought that it was ok to make one’s own alcohol as long as it was for one’s consumption.

Beer and wine making is different for each state. Mississippi and Alabama are the only two states that home brewing beer is illegal. I was involved in introducing a bill before the MS legislature that just passed, it will go into effect July 1st. It only effects wet counties, if you live in a dry county you still can't home brew legally.
