If you’re ever interested in seeing what goes on inside these trucks, ask for a tour of some of the shops over in Gillette, WY that rebuild them for the coal mining industry there.
I’ve been through four shops over there, and when you look overhead and see two 100-ton gantry cranes coupled together to do some of their picks... it’s awesome.
There’s a couple shops in Gillette that specialize in wheel motor rebuilds. Highly profitable as a business. There’s not that many shops (other than the OEM’s) who do this work.
