Major League Baseball is creating a committee to study why fewer African-Americans are playing baseball, reports Tyler Kepner of The New York Times. The first meeting will be held on Wednesday in Milwaukee.
I don't want to miss any opportunity here, [commissioner Bud Selig] said in a telephone interview from his office in Milwaukee. We want to find out if we're not doing well, why not, and what we need to do better. We'll meet as many times as we need to to come to meaningful decisions.
(snip)
I really think our history is so brilliant when it comes to African-Americans, Selig said. You think about the late 1940s, the 1950s wow. And you look at that and you say to yourself, Why did it not continue, and what could we do to make sure it does continue?'
According to Kepner, only 8.5 percent of players on this year's opening-day 25-man rosters were African-American. The reigning world champion Giants are one of several clubs with zero black players. Recent research by Mark Armour from the Society of American Baseball Research says the highest percentage of African-American players in baseball was 19 percent in 1986.
...
Is anyone still wondering why so many people say we need a new commissioner? Better yet, no commissioner! But, especially, no one related to the Selig family!
There's not a lot of White Anglo Saxon players on the LPGA tour ether. Koreans have pretty much monopolized that.
We are pitiful right now. Thanks to the libtards in charge.
oh man I remember Tearaiza claiming she was African American—so insincere
Just off the top of my head as a Tiger fan.
Austin Jackson
Tori Hunter
Prince Fielder
Al Albuquerque (Pitcher)
That’s 4 of a 9 man team.
You got it. Minor leagues are the reason for the decline in black players.
Boise, Idaho. Knoxville, Tennessee. Des Moines, Iowa. Not many guys want to spend 4 to 6 seasons in those places.
I would like to see a commission study why Blacks are dramatically over represented on TV and the movies.
How does 12% equate to maybe a third, and among professionals such as Dr.s, Scientists, Judges etc. I would guess it is closer to 70%. Actually judges is a strange one. It is almost all Black females.
The problem with baseball is that you could be a decent player....go into the “A” league, and linger for a year or two, and then they say you just don’t have it. Why waste potentially four years?
Because they are too smart to waste hundreds of dollars a week on beer party popularity (fans) or understand the odds of becoming a ‘Pro’ in America where only race and marketability matter (players).
That said, Japan has a HUGE love of Baseball rivaling our own.
-IN- Japan.
...AND the NFL study, too.
You know of a Haitian playing major league baseball?
I really could care less.
This whole thing about tracking percentages of races in what is moronic and offensive and quota offensive.
So what if percentages go down. Since when is there a requirement they only go up? Good grief.
How about examining how to get more whites back in the NBA?
This is such a myopic, narrow, zero-tolerance zero thought knee jerk way to think you’re measuring “fairness”. It’s idiotic.
Nobody in the stands freaking cares. Screw the quota people. that’s all they care about anyway. Let em pound sand. Blacks by population percentage are well over-represented on most sports teams people watch.
God. This whole planet is freaking moronic. It’s like libtards are going for the full court press on all issues to drive regular people nuts.
It’s time to get everyone’s nose out of everyone else’s business, and every freaking greedy hand out of everyone else’s wallets. government hands and taker’s hands.
“Waiting for the NBA to study the decline in white basketball players.”
Apparently, the Minneapolis Star Tribune found all the white guys playing for the MN Timberwolves this season. There was actually an article in the paper about this during pre-season. It seems that one of the black players found it weird to be playing with so many white guys on the same team. Lol!
I’m a Prince Fielder fan. For the same reason I root for Mickey Lolich.
Oh, really?
Also are black latin American players considered black or latin American?
Back in the 1950’s they were Latin American
When they come for spring training in Florida, and many places still were segregated....the players would tell the establishment proprietors “oh he is Spanish, not black”
when it came to Black teammates (whether Spanish or not)...that way they could go into segregated places with their teammates
Blacks are not playing baseball as much because there are more opportunities in other sports, esp football and basketball
Football has bigger rosters and more top league jobs, while basketball provides a lot of good paying jobs outside of the NBA...many players are in Euro and Asian leagues making big bucks
what are you rooting for mickey for, today?
This is such a sad thought. (Baseball is the only sport I really enjoy a lot)
To Rembrandt, I was thinking that Selig is getting senile when DH told me about this at dinner. Many of the Astros best players were Black. (I don’t know about now, but mid 80s-90s) lol I couldn’t remember Gerald Young’s name to save my soul, though.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane & thank goodness for rosters on line!
