On Monday, Holocaust Remembrance Day, Israels state archive released the 53-year-old transcript of the Cabinet meeting at which then-prime minister David Ben-Gurion informed his ministers that Adolf Eichmann had been captured and was held in Israel.
The transcript offers a unique and entirely candid look at one of the key moments in Israels history. One of the ministers, Yitzhak Ben-Aharon, was so flabbergasted by the news that he blurted out in Yiddish, Ve macht man das? How does one do that?
The Cabinet meeting took place on May 23, 1960. Twelve days earlier, a Mossad team captured Eichmann outside of Buenos Aires, Argentina, interrogated him in a safe-house, smuggled him out of the country drugged and dressed as an El Al crewman, and flown him to Israel in an operation that is still considered one of the great triumphs of Israel intelligence. The ministers knew none of this, not even the country where the operation had taken place.
Two years later, after a trial that riveted Israel and marked the countrys first public attempt to come to terms with the Holocaust, Eichmann was found guilty and hanged.

I’d wager Europe will back to that within 20 years.
To see him on trial looking so harmless and innocuous you'd wonder why the Jews were being so mean to this poor grandfatherly man
He was a monster, but what is the source of the quote?
An astonishing capture. Blew my mind.

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer
Endless delight? Beyond comprehension.
Wow, I have the greatest respect for WS. It is just amazing that he could have had a count of the victims during all the chaos that was WW2. And amazing that he could be so evil.
Contrast that with the article on the Great Escape concerning the prison run by the Luftwaffe in which the prisoners were treated with respect and dignity. One of the prison German commandants was invited to Toronto (and maybe the US) in the 60s for a reunion with former prisoners.
Tautologically, an SS Colonel is a psychopath

That was probably a requirement.
Remind us youngsters what role Eichman playin in the Nazi regime??
Actually, the Israeli pshrinks that examined Eichmann found he was quite sane and normal.
He was an aspiring, ladder-climbing bureaucrat. Nothing more sinister than that.
Eichmann was the logistics guy who figured out how to get all the Jews of the areas captured by the Nazis into death factories with as little cost as possible.
Eichmann determined which countries’ Jews would be shipped, when, to which camps, in what numbers, etc.
Basically, while the idea of slaughtering the Jews of Europe was the idea of Reinhard Heydrich, Eichmann was the step-n-fetchit bureaucrat who made the trains run on time to carry it out.
I don’t know why Israel bothered with the sham trial.
They had no jurisdiction. The events happened before there even was a state of Israel.
The agents of Israel arrested Eichmann without informing Argentina, which was a violation of international law, they kidnapped him out of the country, another violation of law, and then detained him against his will, all to put on a sham of a trial... presumably to make themselves feel better about getting revenge.
Now, getting revenge for having millions of your fellow humans turned into air pollution is a very fine and just thing, but let’s cut to the chase. Just kill the guy and make it clear that’s the policy: If someone participated in killing the Jews of Europe, then they’re targets for extra-judicial killing. Make it clear that there’s nowhere far enough off the map to run to.
The Israelis should have just killed Eichmann and his family in place in Argentina, then leaked the information to the German press to scare the other SS clowns into hiding deeper in their cellars... or into giving up and ratting out others who were more wanted.
