I am reminded of other places where Carbon Monoxide (???) or some such deadly gas seeps up out of the ground, and kills animals which wander nearby.

I remember reading an article in Smithsonian about a lake in Africa which, you might say, “burped” and the released gases killed a lot of people and animals. I don’t remember any details but surely an Internet search could bring up more info.
