Did you know that consumption of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in the U.S. -- which can be found in a plethora of cookies, candies and fast-foods -- has increased by a a whopping 10,673 percent between 1970 and 2005?
The article begs the question "what other sweeteners were in use in 1970, and what happened to their consumption levels between 1970 and 2005?"
Corn does grow in a lot of places that sugar can’t grow. Odd thing is that throwback soda (real sugar) is the same price as corn syrup based soda.
It is cheaper because of sugar subsidies to the U.S. Sugar Industry that restricts imports and drives up the price.
I have never given much thought to the use and consumption of HFCS but someone posted an article on FB today so I looked some information up. It is strange how much diabetes has increased. A connection? I have no idea.
