I get that too. I have read about people having gone blind because of brain damage (where the optic nerve and eye are 100% functional) and report similar results.

I also think a lot of vision is subconscience. I am sure like me you have driven your car for miles and suddenly you look around and have no idea how you go to where you are.

Yes! Not often, but has happened. One summer when I was in college, I took a job as a "shuttle driver" for Ryder Trucks. People rent trucks, then drive them to tiny little towns all over the place and usually just drop them off at some local gas station, where where there is little demand. So Ryder has local employees round them up and take them to a local hub, but often one that's still pretty remote. Then they fly in a team of shuttle drivers who drive them back in convoys to large metropolitan areas where demand is better.

First job, they flew us to southeastern Colorado. But the guys I was with were crazy. They actually wanted to make money, get back as quickly as possible and shuttle out again! What the...? I just wanted to have good time, see the sights, stay in a motel every night (Ryder doesn't pay for motels), etc. But I also didn't want to break down alone in Deliverance country (this was before cell phones). So I'm sticking with the convoy, even if they never stop for rest.

I remember the first few hundred miles, then nothing for almost a thousand miles. Even immediately after the trip I couldn't remember a thing. It was as if I had been driving in my sleep. Or while hypnotized (white line fever?). After that I decided it'd be better for everybody for me to stick closer to home for my summer gigs.
