Thanks for the laundry soap recipe, yorkiemom!! I like the cost AND space savings. Do you know if this recipe works in the new (crapola) HE washers? Also, is washing soda sold near the regular laundry detergent? ♥

You're welcome, Jane. It's awesome for HE machines since it doesn't suds at all. It IS a little disconcerting to see no suds, but it really does work well. For my HE machine (which I agree doesn't clean worth a darn compared to the old non-environmental nazi machines), I do add the homemade detergent in with the clothes. The stuff is rather goopy and might get stuck in the dispensing thingy.

Yes, the super wash soda is near in detergent with the laundry boosters, like oxyclean. IF you're really adventurous some day, here's how to make it (I haven't tried yet):

Baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) slowly turns into washing soda (Sodium Carbonate, a.k.a. soda ash) when heated above 140 degrees F. The carbon dioxide released is what makes things rise. If you heat baking soda to 400 degrees, it’ll turn into washing soda in 1-2 hours if spread thinly on a pyrex baking dish. Baking baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) drives off carbon dioxide and water and leaves sodium carbonate: NaHCO3  Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2
