I use notepad *txt all the time for quickie no frills keeping (filing away) notes memos etc! I use it with Windoze 7 and will use it with Win 8 too.
I’ve programmed whole applications with Notepad as my editor. No frills, but it works and you can have 50 instances of the thing open to edit different files, and it won’t kill your performance running other programs.
