Well, I just bought 6,480 rounds of armor-piercing 5.45X39 Russian Ammo for AK-74.
I bought it because, well, it's cheap and my AR-15 is like a buck a shot and my FNAR is worse.
So, now, having done this backwards, and knowing ZERO about AK platform, other than apparently the Taliban want to upgrade to AK-74s from AK-47s because the smaller, nastier, round is more effective and pops through kevlar, I come asking knowledgeable Freepers what kind of AK-74 I should buy.
This would be a plinker, bought to shot varmits and generally have fun at lesser expense than my actual nice rifles.
Oh, and the fact the purchase pisses off Democrats is making be do it.
The fact that the rifle requires little care is also a nice selling point.
So far, it looks like the Waffen Werks seems to be the best, but I am relying on Bing for this conclusion.
Are there Golani in 5.45X39 ?
just 5.56 / .223. Scary looking black rifle nemesis of mudslimes!
I would go with either a Waffen Werks or Aresenal SGL-31.
I built two Bulgarian AK-74s myself so I’m partial to those.

That’s a really good buy for what you’re getting.
I personally look for milled receivers vs. the ubiquitous stamped receivers, but for what most AK platforms are going for these days, you’re lucky to find one in such a condition for the price.
FYI: Milled receivers are cut out from a block of steel. Stamped receivers are cut from a sheet of steel and bent into the final product. I’ve seen full-auto AKs made with milled steel glow red at machine gun shoots and they come back screaming every time. On the other hand, I’ve seen stamped receivers practically disintegrate trying to perform the same feat.
That being said, most people aren’t buying or owning an AK for full auto shoots, so stamped work for a majority of buyers. I’ve owned 15 AK platform rifles in my day and traded them for various other guns and parts. They are by far the most stable platform I’ve ever shot. They’re not tack drivers, but you could drop it, run it over, bury it in mud, bleed on it, let the dog chew on it, and throw it into a trash compactor and the damn thing will still go bang. The ammo is (relatively) cheap and still widely available if you know how to look.
What an annoying frickin website! Weapons look nice though.
Don’t tell too many,,, too late. Here comes another price surge...
My fav rifle is the 74. And while all ammo, including 5.45x39 has skyrocketed, it is still a bargain. For now.
The one BIG problem with this platform is the potential for a UN small arms trade treaty, which could potentially cut off virtually ALL supply of this ammo, since the vast majority, including the cheap surplus, is all imported. Even the shells of that which is manufactured in the US is imported.
So enjoy it while you can. The UN is negotiating this NOW.
I’m a 47 guy myself. I sold off all of my 74s a while back. 39 is a lot easier to find and goes into SKS as well.
A better website to see Arseanl stuff would be Kvar.com
Sorry bout that. Yes, it is an annoying website.
Also they get AK’s from Russian arms maker Ishmash...I believe that’s spelled correctly.
