There was a bit of excitement at this end of the road early this morning-my neighbor who owns the nice Mastiff said his wife wanted to know if I had any fresh basil or italian oregano ready to cut yet. I do-I grow a pot of each by the french doors all year for cooking.

He had Juno with him on her leash, and we were standing at the gate, gossiping, when we saw the little terrier next door running up and down the road, alone and unleashed, as usual. The dog ran at the Mastiff, yapping and the woman next door came running down the road, screaming.

Juno showed her teeth, turned sideways to ignore the thing, and it bit at her front leg-twice, so she lunged, pulling her owner almost off his feet, going for the terrier’s back. The woman grabbed up the little beast, and I said take your dog home, hurry. She just stood there, shrieking, so Juno kept jumping to the end of her leash, and the damn terrier bit his owner twice, trying to get loose. Finally, the woman came to her senses and ran to her house, still screeching, with the terrier still yapping.

The neighbor shook his head and wandered off up the hill with his Mastiff and the bag of herbs. For a second, I thought Juno was going to savage that terrier to death, right there, and there would not have been anything to do sbout it-the little dog is always running loose, it is obnoxious, bad tempered, and obviously not very bright...
