I have filed Schedule C with my 1040 since 1980 with/under my SSN. Why should I do it any differently now? The i.r.s. has never had a problem.

You only need a FEIN if you have employees. A sole proprietor selling tumbleweeds on ebay, for example, files a schedule C with an SSN (or FEIN). The state wants sales tax reports on goods sold by a sole prop or 'business' with employees just the same.

Service oriented contractors with employees are not the guy selling tumbleweeds on ebay, but both file a schedule C. Corporations are also assigned a FEIN even if they don't have employees because the SCOTUS ruled that corporations are people.
