I visited 2 stores looking for 22LR ammo. None available. Both store reps say government is buying ammo. Is this so? Why? Are manufacturers unable to meet demand? I try to keep informed but I would not think that one cannot purchase a couple of boxes of 22 shells. Appreciate any information.
I have to wonder if they are telling the gun purchaser up front that after they spend several hundred dollars to buy a gun that they are limited to only 2 boxes of ammo and they can never buy any more ammo again from them? And you thing that is being a good merchant?
I love answers that make sense. Thanks.
First, I’m sure they are limiting the amount of ammo a gun purchaser could buy, considering the very limited amount on hand....
Two, I don’t know if they then restrict future purchases of ammo for those who purchase a weapon but I would think not, probably, bring in your gun receipt and you can purchase another two boxes every week.
Several gun stores in my area are doing that now....Academy sports limit each customer to two boxes every 10 days until the shortage subsides...
You stated “Never” in your post, that’s a very long time....
The ammo shortage will ease soon and then normal purchase procedures will resume.....
The merchants want to sell as much as they can but their hands are tied....
This is not their doing, they are just trying to be as fair as they can.....
It is frustrating to see ammo on the shelve but you can’t purchase it....
Thanks for that. Copied and saved it, thx.
Thanks, I totally forgot about AmmoSeek. I know I’ve been there before and I bookmarked it, but it’s nowhere to be found now in my bookmarks. Stupid Thunderbird seems to arbitrarily drop some of my bookmarks from time to time. No idea why. Anyway, thanks again for that. I’ve re-bookmarked it and copied and saved it to my new ammo sources file that Thunderbird can’t erase!
A wholesaler near me (Widener’s) had 30 cal ball and soft point for sale last week for around $.54/round in 500 count lots. It lasted about two days. I have yet to see any .223 for the past three months, and they have three pages of selection. The 7.62x39 goes in a day, when they can get some in, and the 7.62x25 is anyone’s guess when they might get more from Sellier or Privi. Widener’s is a great company because they do not price gouge. The 30 cal has been around fifty cents per round for years.
Thanks for the info.
I bought a 1000 rounds of 223 for $699.00 a couple weeks ago, but I just happened to be there when it came in, all gone in a few minutes. As for 22LR I have purchased several bricks at a local store, but when it comes in it doesnt last 5 minutes and that is with a limit imposed.
Get in line early before the store opens then run as fast as you can to ammo department elbow in to get you allotment, then hustle to checkout where you put up with the abuse of late shoppers who call you a racist horder. :)
Check your math
Wow impressive list, thanks.
There is ammo available; you just have to hunt around for it and be prepared to wait from 3-8 weeks for delivery. I’m still waiting for add’l .50cal mags (proprietary) from Alexander Arms for my Beowulf; order placed Dec 23rd. Getting 1,000-rnds of 335gr HPs (proprietary) from them took 6mos, in late 2011.
Ordering from that list was easy, cheap & quick until 11/6/12 - and I stockpiled a LOT of ammo & mags for years - and the 12/14/12 CT massacre brought it to a screeching halt.
Hope it helps you.
Which part? 1.6 billion/80 million is 20. 10% of 80 million is 8 million. 1.6 billion/8 million is 200. Which part is wrong?
Also a good place for FTF no-background check gun purchases. Sort of like craigslist except they don't think firearms are scary. Make sure to follow the rules of the state you live in though...

Maybe its time to get a Gamo Whisper in .22
Its incredibly quiet and accurate.
any FReepers know..
soooooo, iffen all the ammo is being bought by FeDs, then
why doesn’t Remington Peters, Federal, & Western just sell
to public. Like some of them gun makers stopped selling to FeDS...!?!
(The FeDs do have ammunition plants scattered around the country)
That’s an interesting question. There for a while, it was standing room only at my local indoor range, even on a day with really nice weather. But I’ve noticed the rush has fallen off the last month or so. I always go in the late afternoon of a weekday so I get in, no problem.
But it was crazy as hell during the week, just after Christmas.
I wondered some about stuff like that. I’ve been tempted to put some of mine up, but then I got sober and thought about it better.
I’m just lucky I stocked up last summer, in advance of the election, just in case.
OK. I found some at the local Farm&Fleet. But, I feel your pain.
