Executive Producers are Roma Downey and Mark Burnett. Burnett is most well known as the producer of the Survivor reality show. Downey is most well known for starring in the Touched by an Angel tv series (1994-2003). They are husband and wife. Being the producer allowed Downey to cast herself as Mary mother of Jesus in the series.
