Bridge implosion knocks out 911, cell service (Texas)
KXAN ^ | March 17, 2013 | John Bumbgartner

The US 281 bridge in Marble Falls is no longer standing. The scheduled blast over Lake Marble Falls was impressive... the blast triggered a communication meltdown. Cell phones stopped working along with first responder radios. KXAN also confirmed the 911 call centers in Marble Falls, Burnet and Llano were knocked offline and the Burnet County Sheriff's Office dispatchers started fielding all calls.

This happened about 9 am this morning but the comments say the phones were out into the afternoon.

No problem in Lago Vista. Very impressive video though.

we live about 15 miles from the site. I almost drove down there to witness the blast which occurred at 8:08 am.

Instead I settled into watching a live TV feed from KXAN...funny thing, the blast knocked out the video so we couldnt see it live...

I stepped outside and approx 30 secs later I heard the rumble.

Landlines are knocked out, a sewer line got cut and fiber optics cable got cut, and on top of that, the north end of the bridge failed to detonate....

I wonder how long before they find fractures/flaws in the new bridge that parallels the blown up bridge?

So far, no loss of life except some carp.....maybe some endangered fresh water mussels, too....

What a Boehner!

Probably cost millions to restore the fiber cable.

This is what happens when you don’t think things through.

Oh well, as they say, “Close enough for government work.”

Have you driven across the new one? It’s all kinds of wavy so I can only imagine what this might have caused. At one time there was talk of saving the old bridge because of “what if” there was damage to the new one or there was a major accident on it. I’m surprised PETA wasn’t there protesting for the fish. Starke Dam is right down from it but would the rubble somehow wash down (yeah, it’s heavy) and cause problems? They left the old Lake Buchanan as a walking bridge.

.
When I worked for our county Public Works Dept (37 years ago). I would generally spend 75% of my prelim engineering budget on site investigation.

yeah, the new one has been open for traffic for a while now & we’ve driven across it.

I cant imagine being the first vehicle to cross the new bridge after the explosion....lol.

I just heard that outside patio of River City Grille got some minor damage from the debris.....

I think we’re fixing to hear how messed up this event became...

Note to self: Move phone lines to new bridge BEFORE blowing up old bridge.

Lake Buchanan gone?? Used to catch hundreds of white bass in that lake when I was a kid...Hotter than blue blazes sometimes with the humidity but remember the great fishing!

There not enough ‘flow’ to wash anything down stream.
