“Whatever happens, happens. If its as bad as some folks are predicting, I dont even know if I WANT to survive it.”
There are so many possible scenarios, and you don’t have to plan to survive them all. I’ll name a few:
1) A nuclear exchange with China, resulting in lots of leveled cities and radioactive fallout throughout much of the country (probably the worst case scenario).
2) An full-up EMP attack that knocks out power and electronics (possibly as bad as the above, although you will live longer and starve to death, rather than radiation poisoning or thyroid cancer).
3) A limited strike/EMP attack knocks out part of this country (hopefully liberal areas), but leaves much of the country intact. Now you’re getting into situations that might be trying to live through.
4) A financial meltdown when China pulls the plug on us (i.e., decides to stop taking worthless money for their high-quality [like it or not] products). In this case, the dollar crashes, and prices triple for imports (and double for most other items) - but it is survivable for nearly everyone - the real question is how comfortable will you be (more on this later).
5) A local issue, such a hurricane, flood, earthquake. Again - most people survive, but the prepared people survive much more comfortably.
So those are a few scenarios. The financial meltdown is almost assured, given our trillion dollar deficits - it must and will happen. So I’ve planned for that, primarily - by having EVERYTHING that I can think of, from cars, to toilet paper, to plastic bags, to spare water heaters, in supply - for at least 4 years. Not to mention boatloads of various types of fuel, water collection, water storage, and water purification capability - and food. The list goes on - the intent is to get through it without having to join the masses carrying water jugs, for example, or begging for food - or not having a way to get rid of waste, if garbage collection breaks down. Those are my steps - not very expensive, overall, as most stuff will eventually get used. They should work for a financial meltdown, or a localized event. They’re probably not enough for a full-scale nuke or EMP attack, but I accept that. I may try for that capability in the future, after I retire, but for now, you know where I’m at.
It is, however, my life. And I like it well enough. I've lived in 4000 sq ft houses that I later gave away in a divorce, and I've lived in an 8ft by 12ft shack I built mostly out of found material and trees that I cut down myself.
I'll take the 8x12 shack with no TV over the 4 bedroom plush hell-hole any day of the week.
I did the mountain man thing through all 4 seasons. Winter and summer. I can do it. I'm in a more moderate environment now, but most of America would call it rough living.
Don't care. It works for me. And as long as I don't get stupid and get married yet again, I can survive most anything.

Actually.... buying in bulk for stuff that you ARE going to use if you have the room to store it, not only saves you on the bulk discount, but on inflation.
I bought a boatload of TP back in '98 because I had a house full of wimmen-folks in the house and Dear Lord, you didn't want to run out. Got single in 2001, and that stack lasted me until 2011.
When I found out what the current price of TP was... I almost passed out.
I saved a LOT of money doing that bulk purchase. Same with my .22 LR bulk purchase when I got a great deal back in '98.

When ever I see the news of the Black Friday crowds trampling each other for a lousy tv or computer, I think of it.
Think about what would happen if it involved food, water or shelter.
I pray our society doesn't disintegrate to that level...ever. As someone said upthread, I'm not sure I would want to see it.

the role of a dictator is to 1: Sqaush or control the media 2: Squash freedom of speech 3: Squash the people’s dreams 4: Make them beggards 5: Squash their will to stand up for themselves by keepign htem dependent on gubmint handouts
This country made their choice loud and clear- they knowingly votedi n someoen htey KNEW was destroyign this country, but who ‘promissed them’ gubmint freebies
The goal of our government is to make it so peopel now only vote for thsoe who promise to hand out hte most- and NOT vote for thsoe who simply want ot uphold our national values and rights- The votign public is changing right before our eyes- we are witnessing hte beginning of the end- and hte sad thing is that soem from brittain pleaded and begged us NOT to go down this road becasue once we’re on that road we will NEVER get off it- and our govenrment knows thisw full well- Cuba was their source of inspiration
Concur...amazing that you made it 13 years, but yes - that would probably be my case as well, if I turned single. I’ve noticed my paper products, reaching 4 years now, stored in unconditioned places in the Houston heat are still holding up very well, as is just about everything else. Even my outdated (canned) food is just fine.
Hey BobL: Good list.
What do you think would happen if Iran pops off a nuke over Tel Aviv or Jerusalem?
That is the one I worried about over the 18 months or so.
How about because some of us think the odds of your various SHTF scenarios coming to pass are so low that it would be a waste of time and resources to take up the prepper lifestyle that you advocate?
Well, it may not be SHTF in a conventional sense.
But there is no part of this country immune from disaster.
It doesn’t hurt to be prepared for an extended period of time if a natural disaster hits.
A Lib neighbor of mine who is a community college adjunct professor was explaining to her 8 and 10 year old boys that if a stranger ever broke in, that they would all hide in the back room, call 911 and wait for the police.
I said, before or after you shoot them?
She was horrified. She would prefer to be robbed, beaten..or worse vs. defending her family and home.
In love with the pension and short on self-worth, a good Liberal Obama voting DemocRAT.

Marcella, you and I have never quite seen eye-to-eye, but after reading your post, I have to say you are one extraordinary woman. Not at all what many of your posts lead me to believe.
I can only blame myself for any unfair inferences I drew.
God bless you in all your endeavors.
yep, good Useful Idiots.
When TSHTF our side will be better prepared. I will only feel sorry for their little children.
I am getting more stuff...seeds next.
