I guess it’s time for me to upgrade to Vista.

If I only ran XP in a VM and didn’t use it while online, would I be fairly safe?

If the computer your VM is hosted on is online then your VM is, too.

Sounds weird, but we run Win98 as a VM for a few things we do because there are no extant threats to it anymore. I would not be so comfortable with XP.

I recommend Apple, and Parallels, then load your Windows XP under Parallels and filtered thru Apple.

Save yourself some headaches, skip Vista and go right to Win7. It’s much better than Vista in terms of the interface, stability, and pretty much every respect, and it doesn’t have all the annoying features of Win8, so it won’t be that big of a learning curve. Plus, the support for Vista will only last a few years longer at this point, so you’d be upgrading again soon anyway.

No. Go to Win 7. Vista is crap, Win 7 is essentially Vista with all the bugs fixed. Pretty good OS.

Stay away from Win 8. You have been warned.

Keep it behind a NAT router, keep your XP Firewall enabled, run the normal protection tools like a good anti-virus/anti-malware program, and run Firefox or Chrome web browsing through http://www.sandboxie.com/ and it’s very low odds of a malware infection taking hold even with no security updates. Still it’s best to get on an OS that can get updates for when there are security issues.

An excellent question!

The same thought occured to me before I migrated to Win7; There is NO WAY I am ever migrating to Win8!

(Posting more about this later)

Yes the Virtual Machine gives Isolation...

And there is a Linux system I have looked at called Qubes OS

Has a nice setup,...they say it is a Beta but worked with what I did.

Has multiple VM's setup,...one for regular Browsing,...One for Banking....etc.Firefox is the default Browser.
