That is exactly my first impression.
The first panda was black and white. The foundation breeder who has bred GSDs for over 30 years thought a border collie from a neighbor had jumped the fence. She investigated; then sent pictures to University of CA at Davis to see if she had a new breed. They declared she did. They did a lot of work on the genetic breeding.
