With a one-point lead, 2.9 seconds to play and possession of the ball, all Hugo High School had to do was inbound the basketball and run out the clock to advance in the Oklahoma state boys basketball tournament.
But what followed stunned everyone.
Hugo guard Trey Johnson got confused after he received the inbounds pass and laid the ball into the wrong basket just before time expired, giving the opposing team, Millwood High, a 38-37 win Thursday night and a place in the Class 3A semifinals.
The boy who put the ball in the wrong hoop will likely be the subject of some good-natured ribbing by his teammates for some time to come and while I'm sure they were not too happy about losing a game they should have won, they will look back at this and laugh.
Over time, this will prove to be a positive life experience for the boy. He'll have quite a story to tell his grandkids and he'll have a YouTube video to back his story up.
I wonder how much playing time this kid had during the game/season.
I watched a game once where Virginia was 4 points up on Clemson with four seconds remaining on the clock. Virginia ended up losing by 3.
You got that right.
As a Pistons fan at the time I can't tell you how much that hurt!
Nother article I read on the story on ESPN said the kid was the team’s top scorer

Yeah, thats something to brag about to the grandkids. sarc/

Good natured? Maybe. Back when I was in HS, if a player did something like that they wouldn’t dare show their face in school for at least a week. And they would never be forgiven for it.
lol
Hate to be so crass but the kid was a moron—at least on that play or else the coaches are to blame somewhat too. oh well...hordes of morons elected Barry twice so there ya go.
And now he’s the laughingstock of the entire country. The story has gone national and the video is all over youtube.
I bet Pete Rose could answer that...
This kid needs to change his name and appearance and move across the country - - or across the ocean.
Maybe fake his own death and start a new life somewhere.
Darwin wins again.
Voice on the video...”he stupid”.
If the kid was smart he’d transfer to the school that he scored the basket for.
If the kid was smart he wouldn't need to transfer and we wouldn't need this thread.
Yup. A play like that would be bad enough in the regular season,,,but in the playoffs? Yikes. If a player botches a play at the end that allows the opponent to score and win is one thing. But to actually score the winning basket for the opponent in a playoff game? Wow.
I was thinkin’ he may have been a bench warmer with single digit playing time. Last game, 3 seconds left, coach figgers, “What the hey...”
To make things worse, Hugo’s opponent has won their next game in double overtime against the defending state champs. One more win and Millford is state champ.
