I wouldn't even be surprised to see if the receiver hardware was build into every car sound system with an expensive software upgrade needed to activate it so the upgrade is pure profit other than five minutes of labor from the dealer.
Also for the car companies to try to shake down the National Association of Broadcasters for an AM/FM radio subsidy like they probably get from Sirius/XM for satellite radio and from the phone companies for built in cell phone phones. The last two rely on the drivers to pay subscriptions to make up the money. I guess the NAB would just have to lean on their stations to pay for the subsidy.
