Getting people off free radio (it’ll be the wasteland of infomercials and spanish lingo radio) just as they tried to kill free television for $60 a month lefting funding.

Digital broadcast works like sh!t during a hurricane. Brains. Government ain’t got them. They’d rather auction off more cellphone frequencies in blocks of 100,000 numbers and tell you it is a “necessary change”.

Try starting your electric car next time the power lines are down too.

All sacrificed in the name of Gaia’s global warming cult and corporatism. Corporations have revealed themselves to be pro-socialist in public policy so I don’t find this to be a “capitalism” slam.

It may not kill off Rush’s radio program but it will further marginalize it. Just as stations have tried to eradicate local hosts talking about local POLITICAL issues (and I don’t mean whether Citgo flew flags at half staff or what some school teacher did to one of his/her students). Much of the rest of the time it’s just syndicated “outrage”.

The illusion of political discourse.

Interesting, and I can't say I'm horribly surprised by this. I almost never listen to radio anymore myself. When in my wife's truck, we have a couple of USB fobs with gigs of music depending upon the type of tunes I'm in the mood for. On my bike, I have a CD player that will play MP3s. It also has AM,FM,CB and NOAA radio, but I can't say that I've spent more than 10 minutes total on all the broadcast bands.

What I'd really like is a 2-meter HAM radio for emergencies and a DVD player that will play MP3s for travelling. (4 GB per disk as opposed to 700 MB per disk for a CDR)

"AM and FM are being eliminated from the dash of two car companies within two years and will be eliminated from the dash of all cars within five years."

Horse manure. No sale.

Nice idea. I used to have one of those about 5-6 years ago. Made by GE. I have it around here somewhere. It worked ok....but the frequency tended to drift as it got warmer.

Though, I was able to make due on this trip. The radio had Bluetooth so I could get my cell phone to act as music source. It has a large'ish capacity Micro SD card with a good amount of music on it. With two batteries handy it kept me happy and I didn't have to listen to any staticy commercials.

The rental co should be able to pay it and turn it on within minutes

I thought of that immediately and gave my guy at the rental place a call. He said the 1 year satellite subscription comes with the car from the dealer they lease from. The rental place isn't the customer who opened the subscription. So there was nothing he could do for the satellite as this car was due to be turned in when I get back.

I tried 3-4 different FM transmitters back when I was driving a lot of rental cars and wanted to make sure I could have my audiobooks on mp3 always available.

The Coby is head and shoulders above all the rest. So much so that I bought three so as to have spares available for some years to come.

That is quite difficult to do in many new vehicles. The double-DIN radio bay didn’t ever really standardize, it isn’t used much any more, and now there is so much ICE integration that putting in an aftermarket radio is all but impossible.

I think this is an attack on AM Talk Radio, such as Rush, Hannity, et al.

I find this hard to believe. Adding an AM & FM receiver to a sound system is cheap compared to the cost of the amps and speakers ... adding radio isn't hard. And it is really cheap compared to adding some wireless internet capable system.

So, in other words, it presents a perfect opportunity to make something currently "standard" into a high-margin upgrade "option". Right?

I wouldn't even be surprised to see if the receiver hardware was build into every car sound system with an expensive software upgrade needed to activate it so the upgrade is pure profit other than five minutes of labor from the dealer.

Also for the car companies to try to shake down the National Association of Broadcasters for an AM/FM radio subsidy like they probably get from Sirius/XM for satellite radio and from the phone companies for built in cell phone phones. The last two rely on the drivers to pay subscriptions to make up the money. I guess the NAB would just have to lean on their stations to pay for the subsidy.

BINGO!

why is google making “dumb” navigation dependent on google vs smart navigation independent of a slave net.
